Soils     iSQAPER Interactive Soil Quality Assessment in Europe and China for Agricultural Productivity and Environmental Resilience. Knowledge regarding the complex interplay between agricultural land use and management and soil quality and function is fragmented and incomplete, in particular with regard to underlying principles and regulating mechanisms. The main aim of iSQAPER is to develop an interactive soil quality assessment tool (SQAPP) for agricultural land users that integrates newly derived process understanding and accounts for the impact of agricultural land use and management on soil properties and functions, and related ecosystem services.  05/2015-04/2020
 LANDMARK LANDMARK aims to open up the soils of Europe and assess farm practices and policies that optimise the delivery of food and other ecosystem services; and also to bring together all the knowledge on land management from European farmers, advisors, scientists and policy makers.  05/2015-10/2019
SOILCARE If European crop production is to remain competitive while reducing environmental impacts, then the development and uptake of effective soil-improving cropping systems is required. The overall aim of SoilCare is to identify and evaluate promising soil improving cropping systems and agronomic techniques increasing profitability and sustainability across scales in Europe. 03/2016-02/2021
DiverIMPACTS The overall goal of DiverIMPACTS - Diversification through Rotation, Intercropping, Multiple Cropping, Promoted with Actors and value-Chains towards Sustainability - is to achieve the full potential of diversification of cropping systems for improved productivity, delivery of ecosystem services and resource-efficient and sustainable value chains. 06/2017-05/2022
BEST4SOILS The BEST4SOIL project will build a community of practice network across Europe by inter-connecting growers, advisers, educators and researchers. Through this network, knowledge ready for practice on 4 best practices for the control of soilborne diseases (compost/organic amendments; green manures/cover crops; anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD); and (bio)solarisation) will be promoted. 10/2018-09/2021

OK-Net EcoFeed The overall aim of OK-Net EcoFeed is to help farmers, breeders and the organic feed processing industry in achieving the goal of 100% use of organic and regional feed for monogastrics, in particular pigs, broilers, laying hens and parents of broilers and laying hens. 01/2018-12/2020

In European countries, the cultivation of fertigated crops experience scarcity of water, and the intensity of cultivation poses significant risks to water quality. The main objective of the FERTINNOWA thematic network is to create a meta-knowledge database on innovative technologies and practices for fertigation of horticultural crops.

The objective of FAIRWAY is to review approaches for protection of drinking water resources against pollution by pesticides and nitrate, and to identify and further develop innovative measures and governance approaches for a more effective drinking water protection.  06/2017-05/2021
WATERPROTECT High-quality, safe, and sufficient drinking water is essential for life: we use it for drinking, food preparation and cleaning. Agriculture is the biggest source of pesticides and nitrate pollution in European fresh waters. The overarching objective of WATERPROTECT is to contribute to effective uptake and realisation of management practices and mitigation measures to protect drinking water resources. 06/2017-05/2020
SolACE The goal of SolACE - Solutions for improving Agroecosystem and Crop Efficiency for water and nutrient use - is to help European agriculture face major challenges, notably increased rainfall variability and reduced use of N and P fertilizers for both economic and ecological purposes. 05/2017-04/2022 
SUWANU EUROPE SUWANU EUROPE is based on a previous project of water treatment in Europe called SuWaNu: Sustainable Water treatment and Nutrient reuse options, which consisted in developing strategies based on water reuse projects to solve problems such as the scarcity or the availability of nutrients. However, SUWANU EUROPE has been conceived not only as an extension of former SuWaNu project activities but also as the creation of a new instrument based on an existing network to accelerate the uptake of research results in the field of water reuse in agriculture and water innovation in Europe.  01/2019-06/2021
 EFFECT Environmental public goods From Farming through Effective Contract Targeting - will develop and pilot a theoretically well-founded and empirically well-adapted package of new contractual frameworks. The project name reflects the overall aim of this project: to strengthen support systems in creating space for innovating farmers. Innovative farmers are everywhere, but their environment determines the rate of success. The project aims to create more space for innovations, through amplifying good examples of innovation support systems and through multi-actor learning about ways to stimulate innovation and remove obstacles.

Ask Valerie

Valerie is a EU FP7 project which is coming to a close. It has developed as one of its deliverables a virtual adviser portal supported by a huge compendium of fact sheets and scientific publications. The portal can be accessed through  the soon to be launched Ask Valerie portal.  

 

 

 

ReMIX

ReMIX is a H2020 multi-actor project that will allow designing cropping systems based on agro-ecology for the benefit of farmers and the whole EU agricultural community. ReMIX will exploit the benefits of species mixtures to design more diversified and resilient agro-ecological arable cropping systems. Based on a multi-actor approach, ReMIX will produce new knowledge that is both scientifically credible and socially valuable in conventional and organic agriculture.  05/2017-04/2021

 

 

LEGVALUE

Participatory project, open to the engagement of stakeholders in the pulse and legume industry in Europe. The objectives of LEGVALUE are; to define platforms for change that can help deliver greater EU self-sufficiency in vegetable protein production; to identify opportunities for innovation, adding value to markets and all participants in the value chains and; to recognise opportunities to influence change, be they at commercial, research or at policy level. 06/2017-05/2021 
AFINET

Agroforestry is a type of climate-smart agriculture practice of deliberately integrating woody vegetation (trees or shrubs) with crop and/or animal systems to benefit from the resulting ecological and economic interactions.

Inno4grass

Inno4Grass is the acronym for „Shared Innovation Space for Sustainable Productivity of Grasslands in Europe”, an international and multi-actor project gathering prominent farmers‘ organizations, extension services, education and research institutions from eight EU countries in which grasslands have a considerable share in the agricultural area and where production of dairy, beef and sheep is of major economic imprortance.

PLAID

The PLAID project (Peer-to-peer Learning: Accessing Innovation through Demonstration) is an European Union funded project under Horizon 2020, starting in January 2017 and running until July 2019. NEFERTITI NEFERTITI is a unique project that establishes 10 interactive thematic networks and bring together 45 regional clusters (hubs) of demo-farmers and the involved actors (advisors, NGOs, industry, education, researchers and policy makers) in 17 countries. NEFERTITI focuses on creating added value from the exchange of knowledge, actors, farmers and technical content over the networks in order to boost innovation uptake, to improve peer to peer learning and network connectivity between farms actors across Europe, thus contributing to a more competitive, sustainable and climate-smart agriculture.  01/2018-12/2021 
NEWBIE The NEWBIE Network (New Entrant netWork: Business models for Innovation, entrepreneurship and resilience in European agriculture) has been designed to address the significant challenge of enabling new entrants to successfully establish sustainable farm businesses in Europe. RustWatch

Develop faster and more efficient diagnostic methods to track new rust races and genotypes, to use them to investigate population genetic changes in Europe and the role of pathogen aggressiveness and temperature adaptation as epidemic drivers in the face of changes in agriculture and the global climate.

SuperPests The overarching objective of the SuperPests project is to develop and evaluate a suite of innovative products, tools and concepts, and integrate these with existing approaches using data driven mathematical models, to achieve effective and sustainable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of the “super pests”, thereby reducing the use of pesticides in the fruit and vegetable sectors. 09/2018-08/2022
RURALIZATION The project is thought to create the conditions to increase the attractiveness of rural areas for the new generations. From this focus, the project is looking for innovative practices that improve rural jobs and opportunities. 05/2019-04/2023
PoliRural Changes in rural areas, such as depopulation, land abandonment and the loss of biodiversity, may proceed very slowly yet are often irreversible. GreenGain

The aim of greenGain is to strengthen the energy use of regional and local biomass from the maintenance of areas and landscape elements, which is performed in the public interest. The scope of the biomass used, will be any material predominantly produced from nature conservation and landscape management, but not from energy-crops.   

 

 

AGRIFORVALOR

AGRIFORVALOR will close the research and innovation divide by connecting practitioners from agriculture and forestry with research and academia as well as with associations and clusters, bio - industry, policy makers; business support organisations, innovation agencies and technology transfer intermediaries in multi-actor innovation partnership networks in order to valorize and exploit sidestream biomass resources from agriculture and forestry.

Baltic Slurry Acidification

The aim of the project is to reduce nitrogen losses from livestock production by promoting the use of slurry acidification techniques in the Baltic Sea Region and thus to mitigate eutrophication of the Baltic Sea waters. 

   

 

 

SmartAKIS

SmartAKIS is an H2020 project which has rapidly gathered a very useful database of digital technologies  related to the agriculture sector. The database is heavily populated with potential solutions to lots of agronomic, environmental and supply chain issues aimed at farmers, advisers, researchers and  ICT professionals. You should register and see what’s there and submit your own technology adding to the 1,200 technologies already entered on the database.

IWMPRAISE

Integrated weed management (IWM) is the way to go for sustainable and resilient agriculture. IWMPRAISE is a Horizon 2020 project that will support and promote the implementation of IWM in Europe. The project aims to demonstrate that IWM supports more sustainable cropping systems that are resilient to external impacts and do not jeopardise profitability or the steady supply of food, feed and biomaterials. 06/2017-05/2022

SUPER-G The overall objective of the SUPER-G project is to co-develop sustainable PG systems and policies with farmers and policy makers that will be effective in optimising productivity, whilst supporting biodiversity and delivering a number of other ES. 06/2018-05/2023
NUTRI2CYCLE NUTRI2CYCLE will use an integrated approach to enable the transition from the current (suboptimal) nutrient household in European agriculture to the next-generation of agronomic practices, characterized by an improved upcycling of nutrients and organic carbon.  10/2018-09/2022
Legumes Translated The overall aim of Legumes Translated is to increase the production and use of grain legume crops as part of a European Protein Transition.[1]  For change that matters to society, grain legume production must increase and contribute to ‘mainstream’ food and feed value chains. 11/2018-10/2021
OPTIMA The Project “Optimised Pest Integrated Management to precisely detect and control plant diseases in perennial crops and open-field vegetables” will develop an environmentally friendly IPM framework for vineyards, apple orchards and carrots by providing a holistic integrated approach which includes all critical aspects related to integrated disease management. 09/2018-12/2021
IPM Decisions The project accelerate impact from farm Decision Support Systems (DSS) for IPM, as advocated in the Sustainable Use Directive. The impact of DSS in crop protection has been constrained by regional and sectoral fragmentation of actors, inadequate testing of DSS and quantification of their benefits, DSS addressing single pests whilst farmer decisions need to account for multiple pests, and DSS which are insufficiently risk-averse. 06/2019-05/2024

4D4F – Data Driven Dairy Decisions for Farmers

The 4D4F thematic network is a consortium of 15 partners from 9 European countries working together to promote the use on new sensor technologies to facilitate improved decision making on European dairy farms. The project improves productivity, animal welfare and the uptake of digital technologies in the farming community. The sensor technologies that are available to dairy farmers are really exciting. They go on, in and near animals and monitor their wellbeing and behaviour.

EURODairy

EuroDairy is a new international network to increase the economic, social and environmental sustainability of dairy farming in Europe, at a time of unprecedented challenge for the sector. The project adopts the interactive model of the European Innovation Partnership, putting farmers at the centre of practice-based innovation, adapting and developing new and existing scientific knowledge to produce implementable solutions, which can then be shared across the network.

Sheepnet

Sheep meat and milk production are very important farm enterprises in Europe and neighbouring countries. In Europe there are 85 million animals on 830 000 farms. However the industry has been in decline and since 2000 the numbers of producers in the EU have declined by 50%. SheepNet will provide many opportunities to improve productivity and thus profitability.
